The Only Downside to oDesk Web Page Content Creation

The only downside to oDesk is that most of the people seeking work to be done are seeking cheap.  I get at least two or three invitations for work on oDesk per week to write content.   Sometimes I simply reject the request and sometimes I go ahead and give them the benefit of doubt and write up a nice response.  I am always turned down for the same reason…my rates for web page content are too high.

This is because most employers on oDesk are seeking Best Buy service for Wal-Mart prices.  Ironically, even consumers today at Best Buy are seeking the same for I recently read that Best Buy is in danger of folding because shoppers are going there, getting the INFO the need, that is, shopping then going to Wal-Mart or Amazon to buy!  That is both smart and stupid at the same time.  Here is why.

If Best Buy goes under, what are they left with???  Shopping at ONLY Wal-Mart and Amazon…now there is NO ONE to answer their questions.  Oh, won’t that be a dream come true.  We get cheap AND terrible answers to our questions.

I had a friend once who went to Wal-Mart to buy a camera and was offended that they did not tell her that she would need a memory card which could hold more than 8 photos.  When I asked her why she went to Wal-Mart and NOT Best Buy her answer is telling…Wal-Mart is Cheaper.  My answer?

Getting What You Pay For in Web Page Content

What does all this have to do with Web Page Content?

Very simple.  I get ample work through alternate connections and once in a while I take a lower-paying job on oDesk because I like the company.  But as long as people try to take the cheap route to getting web page content, that is what they are going to get is cheap.

I have one client who tried to save some money by hiring some writers from India to do his content.  I am now rewriting that same content for what he got, though it LOOKED fine to him, turned out to be HATED by the search engines.  I looked at this meta-tags…less than half had any relevance what-so-ever and the ones that did were nowhere in the articles.  Care to guess where his site ended up in the SERPs?

You guessed it…nowhere.

Worse than nowhere.  His site has a lot of cleaning up if he is to get any ranking at all.  But hey, he DID get cheap content.

How to Determine “Good” Rates and Quality Web Page Content

First, be sure that the writer of your web page content understands that there are two groups reading your website: Humans and Search Engines.  Your ghost writer must write for both.

Next, make sure the ghostwriter for your web page content knows the keywords to use and how to intersperse these into the articles and blogs–if they are building the site for you, be sure they understand the kinds of words and phrases English-speaking people use or know how to research these.

Finally, think about how long you believe it would take to research and write an article.  For instance, this particular blog, which comes from years of expertise, required little time in research, but still a little over an hour to write. Add to that adding the meta-tags, descriptions, images, links, and any other elements that are needed and the task runs a tad longer.

Do you want a writer who makes far less than minimum wage in writing?  Then this web page content would cost about $5.00 to write.  But of course, in that event, this web page content likely would not get search results and you would not be reading it now.  If you want web page content like that you find when reading a national news magazine, be prepared to pay for it (The average cost for content on a major web site is $23K per year).

So let us think about that for a moment.

What if you needed an employee to run errands for you in your place of business.  You hire this person for minimum wage, which in the U.S. is currently around $7.50 per hour.  This person works 40 hours per week and so earns $15,600 per year.  For ONLY another 7K per year, you could have a professional Ghost writer working on your website.  That is not too bad when you think about it.

But instead, many businesses do like my client I mentioned and outsource this to another county at a fraction of the cost only to find that people in other countries cannot do as good a job on the writing because…ENGLISH IS NOT THEIR FIRST LANGUAGE.

I just find this humorous because many of the people who complain that AT&T or Pizza Hut is using Indians to answer phones are sending their writing to the same nation.  This is not to say that the Indians do not do a fine job.  In many instance they do great work, especially in design, CSS, and similar things, but English is not their primary language and we should not expect the same quality of work from them in language-driven tasks, like the creation of web page content.

Just remember…we ALWAYS get what we pay for.  Whether it is web page content or anything else, that adage holds true.
